As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, a professor is simply a dork who has turned pro. Part of getting the Ph.D. is the dissertation, which is supposed to be an original contribution to the knowledge in the field. In short, the dissertation’s author is basically supposed to know what everyone else knows (or can find out) about x… plus something else. This means that as the possessor of knowledge(x+1), that person is suddenly the World’s Leading Authority on this particular x, at least in theory, and at least until someone comes up with knowledge(x+2).
Having been through that funnel myself, I have a mix of sympathy and admiration for my fellow geeks in other fields, particularly in fields that interest me. I understand how much they have to love whatever they’re geeking out about.
Thus, I give you one of my favorite websites, Beyond the Beat Generation. I don’t know the creator, who is based in Amsterdam, but I know this person has earned major geek cred on the subject of garage, psychedelic, and freakbeat rock, and shares bits of his (or her) collection with us through an online player. It’s weird, raw, wonderful music, and the site is a labor of the same sort of love I have for the stuff I study. Hail to thee, fellow geek. Your work and willingness to share it makes life a little brighter. Thanks.
