The guy who was Frank Zappa’s high school friend and who created one of the most joyfully dissonant albums of the rock era has died from complications of MS. He was 69. His work wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but you knew the Captain from a mile away.
And here’s a quote from FZ, regarding Beefheart’s greatest work, Trout Mask Replica (which Frank produced):
“If it had been produced by any professional, famous producer,” Zappa said later, “there could have been a number of suicides involved.”
It’s hard to imagine a better epitaph.
