In Which Grading Papers Begins to Take a Toll…

I encountered the following sentence in a paper about Walt Whitman:

Doctors later found that Whitman’s lungs had shrunk to an eighth of its normal size due to bronchial pneumonia.

My comment? “That should be ‘their normal size.’ Lungs is plural (and Whitman’s were pleural! Ha ha ha…)”

Well, I thought it was funny…

You have the energy to make witty jokes? I’m impressed. The most I can manage are “smiley-faces”.

  2. Smyly says:

That is pretty witty there, Prof. Doubt I would’ve thought of that one…

    ….but you already know that.

Me, I’m ready to make pre-fabricated stickies that I can just pull off and stick to the paper:
    “use the damn spell-checker”
    “lousy grammar”
“You don’t have the foggiest idea how to write”
    “emotions, no argument”
“I’m not interested in your personal opinion”
    “I said 4 pages, dammit!”

A colleague of mine says one of his grad profs had a rubber stamp that said “B.S.” (in unabbreviated form). Allegedly, you could hear him grading papers from down the hall from the SLAM of the stamp as it came down on offending papers.

I really, really want a series of rubber stamps explaining the “its/it’s” difference. And “your/you’re.” And “their/they’re/there.”

My students are juniors, majoring in what is traditionally thought to be a “difficult” major. And yet, I so often wind up trying to re-teach basic grammar…

I DO use VA (“verb agreement”) WW (“wrong word”) and AWK (“awkward,” but when I write it I imagine it in an angry penguin voice) as written shorthands for the appropriate problems.

Groan and double groan! I totally wimped out on grading my papers and put them off until Monday.

  5. David WL says:

Please don’t. We need your wit and wisdom.
