    This is grossly reductive, of course, but…. I think a lot of the reason we’re seeing more “dark and gritty” is that dark and gritty is far easier to produce than sunny and cheerful. P.J. O’Rourke once wrote something to the effect that you can silence an entire room — and make everyone think you’re a Big Deep Serious Person — by acting all mopey about the latest atrocity in Trashcanistan, but almost nobody can do five minutes’ worth of good stand-up comedy. You get Deep Thinker street cred by spouting gloom ‘n’ doom, but in shallow, cynical America in the early 21st, optimism and a welcoming disposition make you sound like Forrest Gump.
