Friday Roundup

I had originally expected to be doing our annual downtown concert this evening, but one of the guys in the band was running a significant fever, and since the thermometer was supposed to hit around 100 today, we decided to bag it. As it turned out, that was a wise decision, as this evening has been marked by one of those torrential showers we get down here this time of year. You might think they’d cool things down a bit, but you’d be wrong — it just makes things steamier. As it happens, however, blowing out the gig had the unexpected benefit of forestalling damaged gear and/or electrocution. So we’ve got that going for us, which is nice. Meanwhile, we’ll shift our focus to next weekend’s recording session in Greenville.

Meanwhile, in a fit of upgrading frenzy, Mrs. M went out today and signed us up for a cell phone plan — we had hitherto been operating with pay-as-you-go phones, but the coverage was spotty. What this means is that each member of Clan Mondo is now equipped with an iPhone 4. I’ve fiddled with mine a bit, and frankly, it seems to operate a a level of tech that makes me feel like a monkey with a shotgun. Case in point: I spent a significant chunk of the afternoon trying to access the digital assistant (Siri) I’ve seen in the commercials. Eventually, I learned that Siri is available for the 4S, which is not the one I have. I’m a little disappointed, as I hoped to discover (among other things) who wrote the book of love, and how they managed to get those eight great tomatoes in that itty-bitty can. I guess I’ll have to wait. However, I do hope to gain a bit more proficiency with the phone as time goes by.

The Spawn has successfully survived her first few days of color guard practice, and has thus far managed to get by with only a couple of bonks on the head from falling flags. It’s odd having her out of the house all day, but I’m tickled to see her making progress — and new friends.

Haven’t done much writing this week, but I’m making up for it by reading more and listening to more music — and with that said, here’s the song that’s been stuck in my head for the last day or so, from Canada’s Wolf Parade. I heard it on the campus station last night, and could have sworn I owned a copy. It was only this evening that I realized it was on a CBC playlist I created a few years back. Enjoy!
