Flying the Freak Flag

I waste a lot of time at The AllMusic Guide, and one of the areas I like to explore is what they call Obscuro. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s unlistenable, and once in a while, it’s both. The idols of the microgenre would be the folks who made it into something like the mainstream — artists like Raymond Scott, Frank Zappa, and the Residents.

If this kind of thing is your kind of thing, I’d like to recommend a blog called “The Weirdest Band in the World.” I don’t know if they’ve found it yet, but the search is intriguing.

A tip of the Mondo Mortarboard to the folks at Spinetingler Magazine (published by the same folks who put out a recent novel I’ve mentioned.)
