Dear Mrs. M,
I normally write you a poem for occasions like this one, but thought I might change things up a bit and write you a thank-you note.
The first time I saw you, I thought you were lovely, and if anything, you’ve grown more beautiful as the years have passed. Thank you for that.
You’ve encouraged me to do the best things in my life, from our first trip to Toronto to my return to grad school, and of course, to becoming a father. Thank you for those things as well.
You’ve been the shoulder I’ve leaned on in my direst moments as well – bad jobs, bad days, the ends of lives. Thank you for that.
You’ve been the wife who never stops loving, the mother who never stops caring, the partner who never stops reaching and trying. Thank you for all of those.
And when my students talk about what relationships mean, I can offer you as the example of what it means to have a partner who will go the distance. Thank you for that as well.
Inspiration, lover, partner, and wife. Thank you, and happy anniversary.
All my heart,
