A Bit of Stylistics

Doing my morning tour of Facebook, I ran across a site called “I Write Like“. As the title indicates, the site claims to take a chunk of one’s writing and find a well known author whose style resembles yours. So I decided to give it a try.

I gave it the first page-and-a-half of the novel I’m working on, and was told I write like Cory Doctorow. I gave it a sizable chunk of my recent post about my mom’s time at Fotomat, and was told I write like David Foster Wallace. I gave it the first two paragraphs of Broken Glass Waltzes (plenty of good parking still available!), and was told I write like William Gibson. So as always, YMMV. Still, it’s kind of fun.

Hmm, it says I write like Isaac Asimov. Who I used to read voraciously, so I’ll take that as a compliment!

  2. Don says:

My prose is like that of H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Clarke, David Foster Wallace, Douglas Adams or Cory Doctorow, depending on which post I feed it.

  3. Samrobb says:

Cory Doctorow with a dash of David Foster Wallace here and there.

  4. Fred Johnson says:

I fed it David Foster Wallace’s Kenyon commencement address. He writes like Vladimir Nabokov. I fed it a bit of a Nabokov lecture on Russian lit. He writes like Tolstoy. The first chapter of Anna K returns Tolstoy as writer (win!).

  5. I have gotten George Orwell a few times.

  6. Blaknsam says:

Three different blog posts, three different results: Stephen King (unquestionably a big influence on my style), Mario Puzo, and H.P. Lovecraft. I can see Puzo, but I’ve never used the word “eldritch” in my writing as far as I’m aware.

Tried it and it said I write like Neil Gaiman. I’ve recently become aware of Mr. Gaiman, but haven’t yet read any of his work. Just thought… since I’m older and have been writing longer… is it possible he writes like me? Just sayin’…
