At NPR, Robert Krulwich introduces us to cartoonist Mike Holmes and Mike’s cat Ella. From time to time, he does a self-portrait (with Ella), but he has two rules. There’s a one-hour time limit, and the portrait must be done in the style of another cartoonist. He calls the resulting images “Mikenesses”, and they’re posted here.
For example (and in the style of a few of my favorites):
Jack Kirby —
and Edward Gorey —
and of course, Don Martin:
I’m not sure what this says about me, but my first thought after seeing these was of a different cartoon character — my totem animal Bugs Bunny — and his impersonation of “Frankie imitating Ricky imitating Elvis.”
In any case, Holmes gathered these into a book, which has sold out. However, we can still check his work out, and share the love.
