Mitt Romney’s decision not to run for President in 2016 is, I think, a wise choice both for himself and for folks leaning toward the GOP. I think he was, and is, a very good man, and would have made a solid President. It didn’t happen, and I think that ship has sailed.
Still, too many of the remaining options are less than thrilling. J. Bush and Christie seem like more of the same, while Santorum and Huckabee give me what an old friend of mine dubbed “the pit shivers.” The assorted GOP Senators don’t do much for me either, because there’s a real difference between making speeches and leading (as the Current Occupant demonstrates only too well.) Rand Paul interests me a bit, but the fact that his dad has been a loon magnet sours me. I’m leaning strongly toward Scott Walker at this point, if only for my hopes that people might confuse him with this guy.
But things can always get worse. The corpse of Romney 2016 hadn’t even begun to cool this morning when an e-mail appeared in my inbox:
