… one of the stranger cats on the music scene. Sterling Smith, popularly known (for certain values of “popular”) as Jandek, was born seventy years ago today. His music falls under the heading of “Outsider Music“, with elements of acoustic blues, avant-folk, and just plain weirdness. He has released dozens of albums via his corporate front of Corwood Industries (in fact, he most commonly identifies himself as “a representative of Corwood Industries”). For years, he declined to appear publicly, but has played gigs on rare occasions since 2004. A documentary, called Jandek on Corwood, was released in 2004 as well. Beyond that, he makes Syd Barrett seem like a social butterfly.
Here’s his first album, Ready for the House, which he released in 1978. May he have many more beautiful and strange years. Thank you for the music.
