In Which the Spawn is Incensed

Late last night, the Spawn came bursting into the room. “I was watching a video on Tumblr –”

“That’s mistake number one,” I said, “but continue.”

“Well, they were in Mississippi, and they were interviewing these poor people about why they’re Republicans. And on the one hand, their message was that these people need Democrats and liberals to protect them and make their lives better, because they’re victims of a bunch of different forces and of conservative neglect.”

“But on the other hand, the video was relentlessly making fun of these people in a really classist way — in a ‘look at these stupid poor people who don’t know what’s good for them’ way. And it made me angry, because how can you claim to care about these people that you say are disempowered while you’re mocking them? If they’re not able to make good decisions, why should we laugh at them for making bad ones?”

“Good question,” I said. “Paternalism and scorn seem like an odd combination, don’t they?”

“It just made me mad. And there was something else.”

“The video people kept asking them, ‘Why do you support Republicans when your support of them has left you living like this?’ And I thought, ‘Maybe they think voting is about more than…'”

“What the government can give you?”

“Yeah, but it seems like that wasn’t even a question.”

“But mainly it was the way they were talking about these people — people like [some people we know and love] — like they’re the helpless animals in a Humane Society ad, while they’re making fun of them for being helpless animals. They wouldn’t do that with any other group, and if someone else did, they’d tear them apart.”

I extended my fist for a bump. As she gave me the bump, she said, “What’s that for?”

“For being pretty wise…” She smiled, and then I finished the sentence: “for someone who watches videos on Tumblr.”
