The Road to Surfdom

I’ve previously mentioned that my circle of friends includes surf-rock guitar ace Ivan Pongracic, Jr. In his previous band (the Space Cossacks) and his current outfit (the Madeira), Ivan has staked a place as one of the top players and writers in the field.

But as it happens, Ivan is also a professor of economics at Hillsdale College in Michigan. If you’re familiar with Hillsdale, you won’t be surprised to learn that Professor Pongracic is of the Austrian School of economics, a fan of folks like Mises and Hayek (whose well known work inspired the title of this post.) He brings a useful personal perspective to his work as well — Ivan grew up in the former Yugoslavia, before his father (who is also both an economist and a guitarist) led the family to the West in 1984.

It’s in these latter capacities that Ivan will be appearing on John Stossel’s show on the Fox Business Network this evening at 8 Eastern time. He’ll be talking about what it’s actually like to grow up in one of the worker’s paradises that Bernie has promised us all. You might want to check him out. One way or another, it’ll rock.
