A Drummer Gets His Union Card

Bill Bruford is a legendary rock drummer, best known for his work with Yes, Genesis, U.K., and several incarnations of King Crimson (with whom I was fortunate enough to see him after the release of Thrak in the 90s.) I’m a drummer, but no legend (even in my own mind). However, I’m pleased to report that Mr. Bruford and I do have something in common now.

Mr. Bruford’s Facebook page reports that:

Bill has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy after 4½ years at the University of Surrey, UK. He now joins the small band of drumming academics (or academic drummers) who continue to shed light on what drummers are for, in the broader context of what it means to make music.

Here’s his page at the U of Surrey. Congratulations, Mr. Bruford, and welcome to the club. Can you show me how to do those five-over-four bits from “Lark’s Tongues in Aspic Part II” now? Call it professional courtesy.
