Today is Lawrence Block’s 78th birthday. I count myself as very fortunate to have had the opportunities both to spend time with him (as a host when he came to Mondoville as a visiting writer) and to work with him (as a contributor to anthologies that he has edited.) His fiction has inspired me in my own work (He’s mentioned in the acknowledgements of Broken Glass Waltzes), his books about writing have been go-to texts in my creative writing classes, and these days his memoir about life as a walker has given me intellectual fuel as I alternate feet. Although we’ve only been in the same city on a couple of occasions, I find myself counting him among my friends, and I’m proud of that fact.
So happy birthday, Larry — I’m glad you’re here, and I’m hoping you have another great year with the work and the people you love.
